How does it work?
Think of your skin as a digital photo in need of high-quality restoration or touch up. Just as a damaged painting is delicately restored one small area at a time, the laser treatment improves your appearance by affecting only a fraction of your skin at a time with thousands of tiny microscopic laser beams.
At your initial consultation, Dr Nawab will determine the best treatment plan for your desired results. Each Fraxel Treatment targets between 20 and 25 percent of the skin’s surface. On average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions, spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months. Because Fraxel Treatment spares healthy tissue; it is effective even on delicate skin areas, such as the neck, chest and hands.
Fraxel Laser Treatment can be performed right in your doctor’s office using only topical anesthesia.
Who can be treated with Fraxel Laser?
Most of the people can be treated with Fraxel Laser therapy because it’s a safe treatment on almost any skin type and color. Every person’s skin condition is unique, and everyone has a different genetic make-up, lifestyle, and personal history. This laser therapy targets your skin’s specific needs.
However, some people can’t get Fraxel Laser Treatment. Your professional skin therapist may warn you against the laser therapy if you have:
- Active acne
- A tendency to form scars
- Autoimmune disease or weak immune system
- Very dark skin
- Taken acne medication during the last year.
How to prepare for a Laser Treatment?
Before you get the therapy, your professional skin therapist will likely
- Ask for your medical history: You need to be prepared to answer all the questions before the treatment. You have to let your therapist know about your current and previous medical conditions and any medications that you are taking or you’ve taken previously. Also, you have to tell your therapist if you had cosmetical procedures in the past.
- You need to do a physical exam: Your professional skin therapist will examine your skin and the area that needs to be treated. This exam will help your therapist to find out what changes can be made and how it will affect the final results.
- You need to discuss your expectations: You need to tell your therapist what your expectations are from this treatment; besides, you need to be aware of the potential risks of laser therapy. You have to be sure you understand well how long the healing time will take and when you will be able to see the final results.
What happens after the treatment?
You will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour and then minimal discomfort. The skin will have a pinkish tone for 5 to 7 days. Swelling is minimal and generally resolves in 2 to 3 days.
Some patients are able to return to routine activities, including work and social obligations, the same day of treatment. Others require a little more time, depending upon their skin condition and treatment. Please consult your physician to understand how Fraxel Laser Treatment will fit into your schedule.
New epidermal skin develops within 24 hours. This process of skin repair involves:
- Bronzing: Your skin will have a bronze appearance that lasts anywhere from 3 to 14 days, depending on your treatment level.
- Flaking: Your skin will naturally and vigorously exfoliate as new skin replaces dead tissue. Flaking is similar to that of minor sunburn, but without the associated pain. The use of a moisturizer will mask the appearance of flaking.
- Sunscreen: Be sure to use sunscreen at least twice daily to protect your skin from sun exposure during both the healing phase and for several months after treatment. Apply a moisturizing sun block with an SPF of at least 30-plus. For added protection, use wide-brimmed hats when in direct sunlight.
Over the following weeks and months, the body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been affected by the Fraxel treatment, producing longer beneficial changes associated with a healthy, youthful appearance.
What are the side effects of the treatment?
After the laser treatment, you may experience swelling and redness on the area that had been treated. The intensity of the side effects may depend on how aggressive your laser therapy was and what healing characteristics your skin has. Every skin is different. Some people who had more aggressive treatment may experience greater side effects than expected, while others who had less aggressive therapy may experience fewer side effects.
How many Laser Treatments will I need?
The number of necessary laser therapies depends on the results on your skin. For example, the condition had been treated or how your skin responds to the therapy are common factors when the number of treatments is decided. Most of the people start to see the changes on their skins after 3 to 5 sessions that are usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Does Fraxel Laser Treatment hurt?
Every skin therapist tries to make the session as comfortable as possible. Your professional therapist will apply a topical numbing cream on the area that will be treated before the procedure. Usually, cold air is also used in the treated area during the session to minimize the discomfort. Most people may feel a sunburn-sensation after the therapy, which usually disappears in a few hours.

Kathy Nagel RN, BSN
Nurse Injector for Fillers and Hair Restoration
Kathy Nagel RN, BSN received her nursing degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. Prior to entering the aesthetic industry in 2004, Kathy worked for nearly 20 years as a Registered Nurse in various cardiac units. Receiving her initial aesthetics training in Beverly Hills, CA, Kathy continued to pursue advanced teachings for the injection of Botulinum toxins (known as Botox) & Cosmetic Fillers, resulting in her designation as a Master Level Injector.
Kathy is a Clinical Nurse Injection Trainer for Merz, responsible for training other doctor & nurse injectors throughout the Northeast. We consider her an artist in the area of Facial Cosmetic Fillers.

Experienced Laser Technician
Kathleen joined our team at VitalizeMD in December 2018, she is a licensed medical esthetician and educator with over 14 years in the med spa business. Kathleen is certified on many laser platforms and medical devices such as Plasma Pen, Collagen PIN, Endy Med, and IPL to name a few. She holds a BA degree in Communication Design and Marketing from the University of Buffalo.
Having owned, managed and provided many services, Kathleen understands the need to gain a client’s trust and listen to their concerns. Educating her clients on results-driven skincare treatments is what she loves to do. She is very proud to play a small role in positively impacting her client’s life. Pam comes with 20+ years in business administration/development, getting her start working in customer service positions at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Afterwards, she spent 5 years living and working in Frankfurt, Germany where she was married and had her first child. Although her career paths have not supported her art degree, she has found that being an artistic person helps one see things differently. “Appreciating nature and beauty the way it was meant to be appreciated.”
In her spare time Pam is an avid nature photographer and is a member of the Assabet Valley Camera Club. She also practices meditation and archery is her sport.

How does a microneedling procedure work?

Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy. The tip of the Collagen PIN contains sterile micro-pins that are used to create micro-injury sites at precise depths in the skin. The result is a reduction in the appearance of textural issues and skin rejuvenation.
Who is a good candidate for the treatments?

How many treatments will I need?
Typically a series of 3-6 Collagen P.I.N. treatments is recommended, depending upon your area of correction or concern. Your skincare professional will ultimately determine a treatment schedule based on your individual skin conditions, skin issues, goals and desires. Treatments are usually spaced in 4-week intervals. Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, stretch marks, or any type of scars, usually require 6 or more treatments to achieve the desired results.
Will the Collagen P.I.N. procedure hurt?
Prior to your treatment with collagen, the treatment area will be numbed with a topical numbing agent. Most people feel almost nothing after having been pretreated with a topical numbing agent.
What will I look like after my microneedling treatment?
Immediately after your treatment, your skin will look slightly pink to moderately red. We have you go home with a post-care kit containing skincare products that are 100% paraben free, gluten free and vegan, which will greatly minimize these symptoms and enhance your overall results.
Can I use makeup after treatment?
Directly after your treatment, we recommend using only mineral-based foundation, as it cannot build bacteria. You may go back to your regular foundation 4 days post-treatment.
How long will it take for me to see the results?
Most patients see results after the first treatment. Individual results vary depending on individual skin conditions. It is common to see positive results as soon as 1-2 weeks after the first treatment. Often, change is noted within just a few days!!!
How long will my Collagen P.I.N. results last?
This produces results through the stimulation of growth factors and collagen, thereby promoting new skin cells to surface. As our skin ages, our collagen production naturally slows down. Your overall result will last longer when using an at-home regimen that includes a daily Retinoid product. We can help you determine the best-suited home care regimen for your skin type. New collagen & elastin formation in the skin are documented as visually and measurably improved as much as one year after just one treatment. However, a series of treatments is typically recommended for best results.

Have you been considering BOTOX® or Dysport but just aren’t sure if this procedure is for you? Maybe you’re completely unfamiliar with facial fillers, or don’t see how they can benefit you. What Is BOTOX® and Dysport?
We’re so glad you asked! BOTOX® and Dysport are FDA approved injectable muscle relaxants that smooth facial wrinkles and lines. Pesky wrinkles around the corner of the eye, smile lines, frown lines and brow furrows tend to appear as we age. This is because our skin loses elasticity and the repeated expression movements start to leave their mark!
That’s where botox comes in. This purified (and totally safe) protein is actually distilled from a toxin called Botulinum Type A and works by blocking nerve impulses in your muscles that trigger contractions. Basically, that’s a fancy way to say that it temporarily restricts the certain muscle movement in your face that causes deep expressions and their wrinkles. The targeted muscle paralysis only lasts about 3 to 6 months, which is why many patients tend to go in for follow-up treatments.
What is Dysport?
You may also see the offering of Dysport injection at our medical aesthetic practice in Westborough. This is nearly identical to BOTOX® in that it is derived from the same Botulinum Type A. The only difference is that the Dysport protein is smaller, so it tends to work much quicker. The end results are similar from our patients’ standpoint!
Who Should Get These Treatments?
Because it’s primarily used to soften the appearance of wrinkles and lines, some assume that facial injectables are only for older patients. Surprisingly, the best uses are in a younger crowd, ideally from 28-36. This is when wrinkles begin to appear but have not had a chance to deepen. In this case, Botox is highly effective for prevention. Why? There are studies that show that when it is used at the first sign of a deep line, they can train muscles to relax so the repeated expression or movement that created the line ceases to happen. That’s right; this can prevent lines from forming in the first place!
However, older patients shouldn’t worry. If you’ve already got those wrinkles, never fear. Injectables can help soften those lines to give you your youthful skin back!
Is There Any Reason I Shouldn’t Get It?
With some conditions, you probably shouldn’t get this treatment. The following conditions are reasons we recommend you do not have a treatment:
• You’re allergic to any part of its preparation
• You’re allergic to cow’s milk protein
• You suffer from a neuromuscular disease
• You have previously had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Myobloc or other varieties of BOTOX.
• You have a skin infection at the intended injection site
• You are pregnant, planning to be pregnant soon or are currently nursing.
Okay, I’m Going For It! What Should I Expect?
It seems like patients’ biggest concern is that this facial treatment will hurt! We’re here to tell you, they really don’t. Many describe injection from the tiny needle as a little pinch, like you’d get from two fingers! Most often there will be 5-7 super-quick injections which will leave little red dots that look like mosquito bites! These fade within minutes. The whole procedure is often done within 15 minutes, so if you snuck off on your lunch break no one will be the wiser. You may have to pull a few funny faces in order to “set” or “fix” the product, and the worst side effect most people have is a bit of a headache for most of the day. Side effects do come on an individual basis though, and besides a headache, some may experience nausea, flu-like symptoms and/or pain and redness at injection sites.
You can expect to see results in about a week, or sometimes a little longer. Most often, you’ll be able to make those wrinkles or lines that you had treated for a couple of days, say if you furrow your eyebrows. Then all of a sudden, you just won’t be able to anymore! You’ll have smooth, serene skin for the next few months before the treatment wears off. For most people, effects last 3 months and wrinkle reduction can be seen as long as 4 months although of course, individual results may vary! One cool thing about repeated use is the effect will begin to last longer!

What are the side effects of dermal fillers?
All fillers can cause bruising, redness and swelling that can last for several days.
How long do fillers last?
Individual fillers have different time spans in our skin. The more active an area you are injecting fillers into is, the lower the life-span of the product.
How painful are treatments?
Injections can be uncomfortable; however the discomfort is very short term. A local anesthetic is either premixed into the filler or it is mixed at the time of injection to minimize the discomfort. A topical anesthetic cream can be applied 1 hour before the procedure if desired.
Are there medications that should be avoided prior to using fillers?
Medications that can increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site should be avoided for at least 1 week prior to the injections. These include Aspirin, NSAID family (Advil, Motrin, Aleve etc.), St John Wort, high doses of vitamin E, Ginko Biloba, ginseng.

How many treatments you need will depend on your number of growth cycles and how hair-free you wish to be. Expect 6-8 removal treatments, spaced 5 to 6 weeks apart. Shaving or clipping hair in between treatments is allowed but no waxing or plucking.
When will I notice results?
Approximately 10 to 14 days after your first treatment, you will see the initial results. It is very pleasing. However, you need to remember that we recommend a series of six or more treatment, approximately 5-6 weeks apart, for the best results. Remember, your body tends to make hair again.
What about side effects?
While side-effects are rare, some patients may have a swollen appearance to the follicles for a few minutes after treatment. This usually resolves before the patient leaves the treatment room, but sometimes can last for 24 hours. Because the Laser generates heat within the follicle, there is a risk of a small water blister. Local pigmentation may develop, which is usually responsive to topical creams, and it resolves without any problems. Please inform us, as soon as possible, of any problems.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Our goal is to make you comfortable. Our technology can deliver adequate power with minimal tissue heating and therefore you may feel minimal or no discomfort. With our Laser Hair Removal technology and with the use of our computerized scanner, treatment areas are scanned in a sequential fashion and not treated twice or more times, which minimizes the likelihood of side-effects.

How Does Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) Work?
Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy works using the body’s own natural healing powers to slow and help to reverse the aging process. It’s a revolutionary repair system that places growth factors in the exact location where we want the skin to repair and rejuvenate itself by working to increase your own collagen. The treatment involves harvesting platelets from the patient’s own blood and injecting them into problem areas. What exactly is acne?
Acne is the result of your pores blocking and allowing bacteria to grow within. Normally our pores produce oil (sebum) for healthy skin. This sebum becomes a growth medium for bacteria within the pore and the resultant block can lead to whiteheads (trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface), blackheads (trapped sebum and bacteria become partially exposed and turn black due to melanin (skin pigment)), papule (your pore wall breaks and white blood cells rush in to fight), pustules (several days after the pore breaks, pus goes to the surface), nodule (pore break along the bottom and a large inflamed bump results) or cyst (severe inflammatory reaction with very large pus-filled lesions).
Can what I eat influence my acne?
While there is still much controversy about diet and its effect on acne, there are clear links between worsening acne associated with fatty, oily and high-sugar foods and drinks.
What treatment works best to treat acne?
Approximately 80% of the population suffers with acne at some point in their lives (as teenagers and adults). Your particular source for acne can be influenced by your age, diet, sun exposure, hormonal influences and genetics. Additionally, the cost and duration of treatment with topical medications and oral antibiotics make standard therapy far from ideal, especially if it’s ineffective. Can I still use a laser if I’m on Accutane?

How often do I need laser treatments and how long will the effect last?
The best treatment pattern is to start off with every 2 week cycles and increase time between treatments as the acne improves.

What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins (are also known as telangiectasias) are small superficial thread like veins close to the skin surface. They are more prominent on the face, back and sides of the thigh and just below the knees. These veins are more distinct in fair skinned people, and more common in females. The spider veins may appear spontaneously and they have no symptoms.
How are spider veins treated?
The most important thing to know is that these veins are entirely of a cosmetic concern. There are several options in treating spider veins. We use state-of-art laser equipment providing a series of individualized laser treatments. The laser coagulates the blood inside the vessel, causing your body to harmlessly reabsorb and eliminate it. You are likely to need additional treatments, since our body tends to re-canalize the veins. Laser vein removal is 90 to 95% effective, but results may vary.
Is there any harm in removing spider veins?
Spider veins have no function and removing does no harm. The only reason they are removed is because of their unsightly cosmetic.

What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is an adult skin disease that causes redness, swelling and occasionally, acne like pimples and small blood vessels on the face. Individuals will notice persistent redness in the center of the face, gradually moving out to the cheeks, forehead and chin. Early on, symptoms may come and go, but eventually the redness will persist with pimples and enlarged blood vessels becoming more noticeable. If not recognized and treated, the disease will worsen. Early recognition and treatment are keys to maintaining the health of your skin.
How do I recognize rosacea?
Look for the small, red bumps on the center portion of your face early on. Redness and tiny blood vessels will also become prevalent and more noticeable with blushing and flushing.
What things help and/or worsen rosacea?
Prevention of flares is the most important factor for treating rosacea. The exact cause is unknown. Avoiding hot drinks, alcohol and spicy foods will limit the flushing. Sunblocks are essential for lifetime. Daily use of SPF 15 or higher should be part of a daily routine. Avoiding excessive massaging, scrubbing or rubbing the face and avoiding irritating cosmetics, hair sprays and harsh soaps is also very important. Always exercise in cool environments.
What treatment options help? Our offices offer lines of medical grade skin care products through PCA and SkinMedica (including various sunblocks), as well as, mineral based cosmetics, for daily use. Individualized treatments are necessary, as the degree of rosacea will vary from one person to the next.

This is my first time doing any laser treatment, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I finished my 2nd of 3 spider vein removal sessions and the results for me are very satisfying. It has made the larger clusters fade significantly and be less noticeable. The smaller veins have all but disappeared. I am very happy with the outcome so far and can not wait for my final treatment. To ensure your health and the health of our staff, we do follow usual universal precautions in our operatories and office. Additionally, every half hour to an hour we wipe down the waiting room and common spaces with disinfectant.
For the protection of all our patients and staff due the recent outbreak of coronavirus, we are requesting the following:
- If you have an illness or are exhibiting symptoms, we recommend you cancel and reschedule your appointment. Some illness and symptoms include:
- a cold or the flu
- fever or nausea
- severe headaches or body aches
- muscle or stomach pain, chest pain or difficulty breathing
- vomiting or diarrhea
- active tuberculosis (TB)
- mumps, measles, chickenpox
- other contagious disease
- Please notify our staff before your appointment if you or someone you are in close contact with have recently traveled to one of the countries with large outbreaks of COVID-19 (ex. China, Italy, Iran, South Korea) or if you have been exposed to someone else who was diagnosed with COVID-19 or who was quarantined as a precaution.
